How did WNYMEET originate?
Beginning in the 1970s, a dedicated group of local manufacturing engineers from the Buffalo/Niagara Frontier chapter (Chapter 10) of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers recognized the need to promote excellence in manufacturing.

This group determined that the best way to accomplish this goal was to encourage students to enter the field of manufacturing engineering by providing a financial incentive to reward engineering students who had demonstrated academic achievement and need.

Chapter 10 set aside a fund for scholarships and administered both the account and the award process for several years. In the mid-1980s, it was decided that establishment of a separate organization would be a more efficient way to achieve the original goal of fostering excellence in manufacturing. WNYMEET was established as a not-for-profit corporation in the late 1980s. Chapter 10 made a significant donation to fund WNYMEET and continues to support the organization with the guidance of its Executive Committee.

Where is WNYMEET today?
WNYMEET has been classified as a 501 (c) (3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service. WNYMEET is administered by a Board of Directors, comprised of members of Chapter 10. Contributions to WNYMEET are tax deductible to the extent of the law. WNYMEET's operating expenses are less than 2.5% of its annual income. This allows WNYMEET to return the vast majority of donations to the community in the form of scholarships.
