SME Chapter 25 will be honoring the achievements of several students from WPI. The night will include a presentation
by Torbjorn Bergstrom. Torbjorn is the Operations Manager of the Machining Lab, Associate Director of the Surface
Metrology Lab and the HAAS Technical Center at WPI.Value Added in Engineering Education
At WPI we have been developing new teaching tools to enable engineers and engineering students to quickly become proficient
at CNC machining for the purpose of rapid prototype realization. Traditional teaching techniques rely on the experience operators
develop over many years. It has been commonly believed that you cannot fully utilize the benefits of CNC machine tools unless you
are proficient at the use of manual machine tools and have felt the vibrations. This can require years of experience under the tutelage
of a highly skilled operator. We have seen that with the use of self paced tutorials students can guide each other through the process
of safe setup and operation of CNC machine tools to make parts of their own design with minimal direct interaction with instructors.
In developing theses teaching materials we have paid special attention to the parts of the process that add value to the students by
enabling them to gain and retain knowledge that will be useful to them and their future employers.
