STG: The Human Side of Lean
- But what about the "Human Machine?"
How to create a work environment where Lean
projects not only get done… but stick!
by: Philip Hunter, Ph.D.

About the Speaker
Philip Hunter is an experienced, strategic organization effectiveness professional consulting with various industries, including manufacturing, banking, pharmaceuticals and information technology in Canada and the USA. Philip has a PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of North Texas.

Who should attend?
Just so we"re clear - this is not just another "soft and fuzzy" HR type presentation. We"re going to be discussing tools and principles that have been researched to death, but are surprisingly absent from the public domain. Some of these findings about the "Human Machine" may strike you as odd. Some of them may strike you as counter-intuitive. And yes, some of them might strike you as nonsense.

  Abstract

Some of you might have some knowledge of the process side of Lean and Six Sigma. But what about the "Human Machine"? How do we get our "Lean" message across, execute great projects, and show tangible results? How do we organize, communicate with and just plain get people to implement and sustain Lean solutions that are on-time and within budget? Where can we go for help?

Jump on Google, or browse the business section of any bookstore and you"ll be inundated with bold, flashy titles such as these:

"How to MOTIVATE others!"
"We need LEADERS, not managers!"
"How the world"s best managers INSPIRE their employees to deliver results"
"How 4 weeks of tap dancing lessons leads to a HIGH PERFORMANCE workplace!"

Ok - maybe you haven"t seen that last title. But you"ve certainly seen the first three!

Here"s a contrarian's proposal–

Whether you"re a front-line employee, supervisor team/project manager, or VP, it"s not your job to motivate anyone, because that"s not how the "Human Machine" works!

We"re going to look at the following:

  1. What the "Human Machine" needs to achieve and sustain high performance.
  2. What"s inside each and every one of your employees and colleagues that"s waiting to be unleashed.
  3. The key to high performing individuals, teams, departments and organizations.

Come prepared to listen. To think. To disagree. To debate. Above all, to learn!

Here are 3 benefits that you will get by attending:

  1. How to improve the odds that your Lean projects will actually stick after you leave the scene.
  2. Learn how to organize and manage project teams so you can go home on time.
  3. Be introduced to proven principles that will make your life easier (e.g., how people truly are motivated to do their best.
