The Bowmanville Foundry, Iron Castings and ISO Iron Foundries Established in 1901, The Bowmanville Foundry has a long history of technical innovation and process leadership in the manufacture of Ductile, Gray and Malleable Iron castings. More information can be found at Bowmanville Foundries website: www.bowmanvillefoundry.com/

The Bowmanville Foundry achieved ISO 9002 certification in 1996 and undergoes re-audits by SGS International twice each year to ensure continuous improvement of all quality related systems.   We are very proud of our clean, ultra modern metal casting facility. If you would like to learn more about us please contact us.   After taking the tour of the Bowmanville Foundry you should be convinced that this is not your typical foundry. We are the Foundry that can help you make your products better.

                        INNOVATION and INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP

  • Bowmanville developed and commercialized the short-cycle electric annealing process currently used industry-wide in the production of Malleable Iron.
  • Bowmanville also initiated the move to electric induction melting from coal-fired cupola melting in 1962.
  • Innovations include the production of Ductile Iron using the state-of-the-art Sigmat process assuring tighter The Bowmanville Foundry process control and higher quality Ductile Iron, especially in thinner sections. This process also enables the Foundry to reliably produce Austempered Ductile Iron, a material that rivals alloy steel castings and forgings in strength and toughness.
  • The entire green sand production, molding, pouring, shakeout, and cleaning operations have been recently replaced with the latest automated machine technology, flexible enough to utilize all existing patterns and tooling up to and including 16 x 20 inches and in addition providing the benefits of precision automated technology.

      TECHNICAL EXPERTISE and CUSTOMER SUPPORT

  • The Bowmanville Foundry specializes in producing smaller castings, weighing from ounces to twenty pounds, requiring a finer surface finish and superior cosmetic appearance.
  • A wide range of iron specifications can be provided to suit almost any application and industry sector in the low to medium volume range.
  • Currently more than one thousand different castings are produced for several hundred customers in volumes ranging from hundreds to hundreds of thousands.
  • Castings are delivered in any stage of production from as-cast to finished parts including machining, plating, galvanizing, painting and insert plastic injection molding.

Round Table Outcome and Overview

Written by Patrice B. Bansa

Based on round SME-26 Chair Round Table discussions in late 2006, it became clear that today’s environment has changed over time and that it is necessary for the Chapter to adjust its strategy and focus in order to clearly address the needs of our Customers.

This was accomplished in two very intensive strategy workshops on Saturday March 27 and April 14, 2007, led by expert facilitator Barry Wood, in which over 20 volunteers and executive of the SME-26 Chapter developed the future strategy of the chapter.  The dedicated work and intensive discussions of the group resulted in definitions of the chapter’s Core Values, Vision Statement, and Opportunities which we are pleased to present below.  These will serve as a foundation to consistently guide us towards a better SME chapter.  While the sessions were characterized by hard work, everyone had fun, good food, and camaraderie… including occasional guidance from above.  We thank all participants and contributors for their generosity.

While this marks an exciting new era, in order to achieve the goal of a revitalized chapter requires ongoing efforts.  Thus, we are calling for volunteers to participate in small cross functional teams and planning boards to assist the chapter in setting and achieving time-bounded objectives to realize the opportunities outlined below.

CORE VALUES

We act with integrity, mutual respect, honesty and responsibly to each other and the community at large.

We believe in active learning, the enhancement of knowledge, and engagement with our diverse society.

VISION STATEMENT

Leading Manufacturing Innovation through People

We will:

·         Strive to be the innovative forum for the exchange and enhancement of manufacturing knowledge and practices.

·         Effectively communicate and interact with chapter members and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

·         Provide and support relevant, original, impactful exposure, training and mentoring to chapter members and the manufacturing community.

·         Boldly reach out to youth, educational institutions, government and society to assert the vital contribution of manufacturing to us all.

·         Take leadership in developing sustainable manufacturing to increase the quality of life for our future generations.

·

OPPORTUNITIES

·         Identify and make use of experts in required knowledge base expertise to drive innovation*.

o        E.g. Knowledge expert in sustainable manufacturing in three years.

·         Identify current training gaps and future training needs and fill them

·         Understand evolving perceptions, values and needs of youth relative to technical and manufacturing opportunities, and endeavor to provide ongoing support and guidance and mentoring.

·         Strive to increase membership and participation (e.g. by 30%)

·         Review and improve our communications strategy, tools and techniques.  Embrace new and innovative ways of engagement.  Align communications with our visions.
