Politically Aware
by George Heintzman
November 15, 1999

I think our members should become more politically aware. I hate it when I read of a bicycle plant being shut down and closed by a capricious customs ruling that is eventually overturned. But the jobs were lost anyway.

We must have political stability. For example tax barriers dam up change and protect us from international realities for a short period of time. It will be good for canadian manufacturing to be exposed to international competition when the auto pact is dismantled. But it must be done slowly - perhaps 10 years. Investors must be assured of stability or they will not invest in capital or training.

When some politician or one of their employees (Read civil servant) screws around with manufacturing we should tell them what it costs in terms of jobs and lost investment.

Attached are some graphs to illustrate this point.
