Plant Tour Information:  We will tour the letter processing plant in the evening when the largest amount of letters will be processed. Prior to the tour and overview about Canada Post and its Lean Journey will be provided by Scott MacKinnon, Manager Performance Excellence CRM & Six Sigma.

About Canada Post : Canada Post began its Lean Journey in the mid 1990s when an operations executive took an interest in lean and process excellence, and struck up a working relationship with Jim Womack, co-author of Lean Thinking, and founder of The Lean Enterprise Institute (Boston). when they started their lean initiatives everything was crowded and there was no free space in many of their facilities. Over time they rearranged machines, cleaned up the mail flow, and freed up space. In Toronto for instance, Canada Post had five letter mail facilities. Those five became one, occupying a footprint that nobody would have thought was possible many years ago.   Today, on top of their efforts to improve mail flow within each facility, Canada Post is working to unify its operations, standardizing processes and best practices across the organization. The constant goal: The right product in the right place at the right time, all of the time.  Specially trained "lean six sigma" leaders coordinate many of these projects. Armed with a black-or green-belt training certification, they collect data and apply lean material flow and six sigma statistical tools to identify the greatest opportunities for improvement, and then implement changes.

Scott McKinnon is the “Manager Performance Excellence CRM & Six Sigma” and part of a supply-chain integration team and works out of the South Central letter processing plant we are going to tour. The facility processes nine million pieces of letter mail per day.

"Years ago it was always a mad rush on the dispatch; things coming and going. Chances for flaws and loss of integrity in quality were a lot higher than they are today," MacKinnon says. "Input quality and scheduling excellence, the combination of those two items will give us extremely strong capability of providing one-day local-to-local letter mail delivery out of this plant to our delivery customers."

Canada Post's primary metric is delivery time. A system-wide audit reported that 96.8% of mail arrived within the service targets, which range from next day to four days depending upon distance.

Chair year end message from Wendy Chen

Dear Members and Friends of Toronto Chapter 26,

On behalf of our chapter executive committee, I would like to extend our warmest season’s greetings to you and your family. I Hope you had a happy holiday season and wish you a prosperous 2007!

Over the year of 2006, our chapter executives have worked very hard to provide our members with various activities. Some highlights include our 65th Anniversary Party, plant tours to Honda Alliston facility, Messier Dowty Oshawa facility, and technical presentations on machining and lean manufacturing, etc. These events provided our members and other professionals in manufacturing community around GTA with the opportunity to listen, see and learn. At the same time, people attended our programs and events were able to network with fellows in the different companies.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our officers and executives for all the great efforts they put in. Especially mentioning: Rick Marmei, the Chair-Elect, has been our bulletin and web site editor to ensure that our members are well informed. Ken Shah, the Secretary, has been doing a great job keeping meeting minutes and also organized regional meeting as well as other events. Juergen Boenisch, the STG Champion, has organized various plant tours and workshops focusing on “the Human Side of Lean”. Farhad Shafiei, Past Chair, has been handling emailing bulletins to our members and continued to support our officers. Loris Giuricich has been supporting our programs by taking registrations for years.  Jenny Ono Suttaby, Joe Benedetto, George Heintzman, Bruce Keeling, Ken Kogej and many other past chairs also supported us and gave us numerous great suggestions. Without the great work from all the above-mentioned, none of the programs and events could have happened, not to say have been so successful.

Year 2007 is approaching and our new officers will be serving your needs by putting together technical programs for educational and networking purposes. Please continue to support us by attending our chapter events. Feel free to contact any of our executives and let us know what you would like us to improve.

Once again, hope you had a nice holiday! See you in the New Year.
Best regards,

Wendy Chen

Chair of Year 2006 - SME Toronto Chapter 26
