The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is an international professional
society dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge in the field of
manufacturing engineering and management. Founded in 1932, SME has more
than 80,000 members in 72 countries and sponsors over 350 senior chapters
and 200 student chapters worldwide. Each year the Society of Manufacturing
Engineers recognizes individuals who have made significant achievements in
the field of manufacturing engineering and management. The following seven
awards are open to the manufacturing community.

SME Gold Medal
Recognizes outstanding service to the manufacturing engineering
profession in technical communications through published literature,
technical writings and lectures.
SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal
Honors significant published research leading to a better understanding
of materials, facilities, principles, operations and their application
to improve manufacturing processes. The person honored must be
personally involved in manufacturing research and the research results
must demonstratively lead to improved manufacturing.
Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing Management Award
Recognizes exceptional success in the integration of the infrastructure
and process manufacturing through innovative use of human, technical and
financial resources and for achieving significant gains in
organizational competitiveness. This includes implementing advanced
technology or concepts in education, research or production, early
recognition of significant strategic needs and leadership in
implementing manufacturing changes, leadership in implementation of
combinations of technology, human capability and strategies, and
leadership in effective use of existing human, technical and financial
resources.
Eli Whitney Productivity Award
Awarded for distinguished accomplishments in improving capability within
the broad concept of orderly production. The person receiving this award
should be presently in a top management position, active personally in
the development of ideas, concept of process, associated with
engineering, responsible for proven concepts, with wide recognition in
the area of mass production and generating greater productivity.
SME Albert M. Sargent Progress Award
Recognizes significant accomplishments in the field of manufacturing
processes, methods or systems. This could include technical progress in
support of productivity, techniques which are widely used, or are used
for many years. This award is normally presented for technical rather
than management contributions and the recipient should be personally
involved.
SME Education Award
Honors the educator most respected for the development of
manufacturing-related curricula, fostering sound training methods or
inspiring students to enter the profession of manufacturing. The person
honored should be responsible for creating or stimulating development
for manufacturing engineering or manufacturing engineering technology
curricula still in use or for exceptional contributions to the
development of continuing education opportunities. It is not necessary
for the person honored to be an academian or reside in the United
States.
Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer
Awarded to a number of outstanding young manufacturing engineers for
exceptional accomplishments; such as technical publication, patent or
technical-professional society leadership. Nominees must be age 35 years
or younger.
