 Secretary’s Report:

Chairman Petrach asked if there were any additions or corrections to the unofficial March minutes as posted on the website.  There were none, Phil Crockett moved to accept the minutes and Scott Manning seconded the motion.

Treasurer’s Report:

No report – Bob Petrach reported that Jack Wagner informed him that he did not have update from SME headquarters to finish report. Audit and update due next meeting.

Nominating Committee:

Gary Shepperd informed the board that we have a new Student Relations Coordinator - Jennifer Lyn Warstler an Advanced Quality Engineer with Engineered Plastic Products, Inc. Jennifer is also a masters student at OU and had a final conflict with this meeting, she should be at next meeting.

Gary also used this time to update us on the SME Annual meeting in Baltimore that he has tentatively planned to attend. Jack Day noted that the chapter typically sends the Chair Elect to the annual meeting for required training, however there is some flexibility. There are four PDCs (Professional Development Conferences) annually that fulfill the requirement and attendance at one of the others is an option.

Membership Report:

Cathy DeNardo reported that the Telethon is Tuesday April 26, 2005 9am-8pm at SME headquarters, contact her to volunteer, more volunteers are required. Flyers for the Telethon are on the table at the entrance to this room. The engraved SME name badges are  $7.95. Sign up with Cathy if you want a badge.

Programs Report:

Scott reported that for 2005 he only needed a speaker for the October meeting.  Cathy DeNardo told Scott she had a good possibility for October and would provide him with the contact. Jack Day added that it would be good to start work on January and February 2006 speakers to take advantage of the good momentum we’ve had arranging speakers and maintain it.

As a part of discussion, Jack Day mentioned Dragon Meade Brewery in SE Warren would be a good tour. He also mentioned that a program covering public speaking and writing skills would be useful. His observation is that SME members (and leadership) could use improvement in those areas.

Bulletin Report:

Joel Storchan reported on bulletin status, (April bulletin is out, SME turned it around quickly again and it went out bulk mail this time rather than first class. Joel asked Scott to make it standard practice to put Joel in direct contact with speakers so Joel can get more complete bio’s and abstract of presentation into the bulletin. Joel also mentioned he had taken advantage of the best practice link that Alan sent out and was looking at other bulletins for ideas.

Certification Report:

The result of the CMfgE and CEM tests given April 3 were 2 of 3 passed the CMfgE test and 1 of 1 passed CEM. CMfgT certification review is to be June 3 and 4, with test June 5. As always, other tests can be proctored at that time.  John is looking for information on anyone interested.  Phil Crockett is doing a special (closed) test CMfgT session for eight people from Dana Corp for a class that he teaches for Dana.

Student Chapter Reports:

Phil reported that he signed up 24 new members for OCC in the past two weeks and all annual reporting except their officer list was into SME. Bob Petrach reported that OU student chapter reports were almost complete and would be in to SME on time. He also reported that our new Student Relations Coordinator - Jennifer Lyn Warstler had been in contact with Elaine Petrach, OU Student Chapter Chairman and provided some ideas for attracting more members.

TCN Report:

Gary Shepperd reported for Dick Bailey that he’s got a link for TCN information http://www.sme.org/cgi-bin/communities.pl?/communities/community_news.htm&&&SME

and The Human Side of Lean Technical Group has a conference call every Tuesday at 7 pm, contact Dick if interested.  Gary Gathen and Dick are also presenting at the PDC in Oconomowoc, WI in August.

Jack Day explained the way TCNs and Geographic Chapters were meant to complement each other providing opportunities for more meaningful technical experience in area of expertise to members by providing a format to interact nationally and internationally with others in the same specialty. The TCN Chair is a local chapter resource to help ease our chapter members into the correct TCN based on the individual’s interest or specialty.

Best Practice Report:

Alan sent out a link to Best Practice site http://chapters.sme.org/164/rcc/bestpractices.html

He also stated that he was close to submitting the Best Practice on the Telethon.

Old Business:

Outreach STEPS Program:

Cathy DeNardo reported that there is a meeting April 14 at SME headquarters discussing the possibility and logistics of a STEPS program at OCC / OU. Along with STEPS activities, Cathy DeNardo mentioned there is a Women’s Conference in Novi, September 2005, Cathy, Kathie House and Jack Day are on the Diversity Initiative advisory board.

Gary reported that the July Social probably would be at Logan’s at 14 Mile and John R on Thursday July 14. Final plans would be made in July and email notification sent out.

New Business:

SME Education Foundation – Bob Petrach noted SME Education Foundation was asking Chapters for donations. Discussion on amount was tabled until May meeting. (after availability of Treasurer’s report)

There was discussion about the service SME provides. Jack Day pointed out that to properly administer a scholarship program takes many resources for little benefit. He also pointed out that we need to look at the intent behind our support of scholarships. Perhaps bridge memberships, a method to ease the transition from student membership to Senior membership needs further consideration and development.

Jack also pointed out that there is a sustaining membership opportunity available. Details to follow when available.

Mentor Michigan VISTA  - Bob Petrach pointed out opportunities and gave web address for those interested.

http://www.michigan.gov/mentormichigan/0,1607,7-193-27049-85251--,00.html

EWeek 2007 -  SME is lead organization in conjunction with its 75th anniversary. (assume 18-24FE2007) Demonstrations of manufacturing – rapid prototyping, laser inspection, etc. possibly at a mall or other public location discussed - just a thought starter at this point.

Tours – Jack Day mentioned Dragon Meade Brewery in SE Warren would be a good tour.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Petrach For Kathie House, Secretary Chapter 69
