Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Chapter 69

Minutes of the Executive Board Meeting

April 12, 2006

Technical Presentation:

The presenter for the evening was Prof. Steve Atma of OCC.  His presentation was ‘‘Education and Manufacturing Automation’’ in which he described a new manufacturing Automation program at OCC called Automation Systems Technology. Professor Atma has BSME, BSEE, BS Industrial Education and MA Education

degrees and has been teaching at OCC for about 25 years after an extensive

resume in industry.

Professor Atma presented information on the broad engineering programs available at OCC which also can lead to a Bachelors degree from Ferris State University . The program is designed well to give a graduate the skills to step right into industry.  It also presents an extremely attractive, cost effective way to get a college education.  As well as the agreement with Ferris State on this program, OCC has articulation agreements with Lawrence Technological University and Kettering University .

This technical presentation spurred a spirited discussion of the needs of the manufacturing industry in the near term and in five years. There is a serious lack of understanding of the opportunities and needs for skilled tradesmen and engineers with “hands-on” training and an understanding of basic mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and controls systems. SME has an organization needs to get the word out about the value of manufacturing, the opportunities coming and the opportunities available here. We need to support the revised educational requirements proposed for high school graduation and promote the fun of science and math in middle and high schools.

Chairman, Gary Shepperd began the meeting at 7:25 p.m.

Meeting Attendees:

Gary Shepperd-Chairman, John Dinovski-Chair Elect, CMfgE, Jack Wagner-Treasurer, CMfgE, Scott Manning-Programs Chair, CMfgT, Cathy DeNardo-Membership Chair, Larie Smith-Certifications Chair, Jack Day-CEM, CMfgE, Richard Bailey, CMfgE, Phil Crockett, CMfgE, Paul Drallos, PhD- Bulletin Editor, Robert Petrach, CMfgE, Vern Speidel, CMfgE, PMP, Gary Gathen, Frank Fenton, Phil Hale, Mike Lindeman, and Steve Atma.

Secretary's Report

A motion to accept March minutes was made by John Dinovski and seconded by Scott Manning.

Treasurer's Report

Jack Wagner gave the report and noted that we are in good financial shape for this year. Current checking balance is high enough to qualify for no fee charge. The $350 funding approval from SME has not yet been received.

Membership Committee:

Cathy DeNardo reminded everyone to sign in and that name badges were available for $8.   She then gave STEPS report. The schedule was passed out for the event held July 30 to August 5. There are many volunteer opportunities to bring engineering information to the girls. Tuesday and Wednesday are “career Information days”. Speakers can volunteer for 2 hour blocks, volunteers who spend the whole day on company time can have their companies listed in the sponsor list. There are openings for 50 girls. The call is open for 2007 program sponsors. Contact Cathy for more details.

Programs Report:

Scott Manning thanked Steve Atma again. He then reported that the  May Technical Presentation is   “Motion Control Overview - Finding My Lost Motion’’ by Jack Wagner.

Scott will start in a month or so to line up fall presenters.

Certification Report:

Larie Smith reported that the program was postponed to better fit the schedule of the participants. The review is scheduled for April 28 and 29 with the test on April 30.  The test site is TBD as the Hilton has raised the room rate dramatically.  Larie needs volunteers for the review sessions and with the certification exams. Three or four participants are expected to take the exam.

Communications Report:

Doug Ruffley was out of town, no report.

Student Chapter Report(s):

Jennifer Warstler was absent. Wine Tasting –for April 22 is off, future event under consideration.

  Bulletin Report:

Due to lateness of available information, the April bulletin only went out as an email bulletin and web posting. Next bulletin is scheduled for August. The question of dropping the paper bulletin and changing the bulletin to an email format was discussed.

A motion, “change to an email only bulletin and eliminate the mailed bulletin” was made by Jack Wagner and seconded by Scott Manning. The motion passed, 5 “for”, 0 “against”, 2 “absent/ abstaining” and the Chairman vote not required.

There was further discussion about mailing an information card to members to gather email addresses and notify  members of the financial necessity of eliminating the paper bulletin. (currently, email addresses are available on only about 65% of members)   Question was tabled until more information about the best and most cost effective way to do this could be further investigated. The advantages and disadvantages and problems of selling advertising were also discussed.  Consensus was not to attempt advertising at this time.

Old Business:

Vern Speidel accepted the Best Practice Coordinator position.

We are still looking for a new TCN Coordinator.

New Business:

Cinco De Mayo party is no longer being scheduled as a SME chapter 069 event.

The Summer Social event is still tentatively scheduled for July 14. A volunteer to set up the event is required.
