A step by step process for publishing
your chapters web page on http://chapters.sme.org/

Getting on the information super highway

FTP: keep on trucking!

Up to this point our efforts have been kept to the privacy of our own personal desktop. From here on that all changes. This step will move a copy of your chapters Web Page out to the World Wide Web server otherwise known as "http://chapters.sme.org/xxx/ ". At this writting the web server is a MS-WindowsNT system running Version 4 (SP5) with 'FrontPage' extensions. The system is Y2K compliant.

If you'll recall in our example our accounts chapters Web Page was located at URL (Universal Resource Locator)...

And that we will be using a networking utility generally referred to as FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Specifically for this documentation and examples we will use "WS_FTP95" from IPSWITCH. We'll setup a profile to FTP to the 'chapters.sme.org' web server. You only need to do this setup once and then repeatedly use it for web page updates.

1.   With a 'Dial-up' PPP connection or LAN Ethernet connection established into the Internet launch your copy of WS_FTP.

2.   In the forground window - the 'Session Properties' GENERAL dialog box tab you'll configure a 'profile' for your express use of uploading to your Chapter Web Page space. Start by clicking on [NEW] and fill in the dialog box blank fields as follows.

In the field labeled...

  • 'Profile Name:' enter a name (ie: chapters.sme.org/nnn/)
  • 'Host Name:' enter the host name chapters.sme.org
  • 'User ID:' enter YOUR webmaster account ID nnn, your 3 digit chapter number and NOT the examples sited here.
  • 'Password:' enter YOUR webmaster account ID password. NOTE: Case sensitive!

3.   Selecting the tab STARTUP dialog box you'll configure the necessary PATH for...

  • 'Initial Remote Host Directory:' you can leave this blank as you should default to your chapters server area.
  • 'Initial Local Directory:' Enter your systems PATH to where you are storing your web page development. C:\chapters.sme.org\nnn\

4.   Selecting the tab ADVANCED and FIREWALL dialog boxes you'll find the following (no changes necessary)...

Up to this point what you were entering need only be done once to setup your webmaster account within the FTP utility. From this point on, as you return to upload files, you need only pick your 'Session Profile' from the pick list. Once selected just enter as before...

  • 'User ID:' enter YOUR webmaster account ID nnn, your 3 digit chapter number and NOT the examples sited here.
  • 'Password:' enter YOUR webmaster account ID password. NOTE: Case sensitive!

5.   Confident that this is correctly enter, click on the [Ok] button to connect with the SME Chapters Web Server to establish your FTP client/server session. If successful you'll get the following foreground window on your desktop.

  • 'Remote System:' PATH.

  •      Directory/file structure (on the right side)
  • 'Local System:' PATH.

  •      Directory/file structure (on the left side)

At this point you are ready to "push" or "pull" files to or from the SME Chapters Web Server space assigned to your chapter. Points to remember; 'binary' radio button (see above) will do for most all file transfers,

In the above image of WS_FTP window you have your local desktop machine on the left and the remote SME Web Server host machine on the right. The file lurking on the right is your 'Default Chapter Web Page'. The file on the left is your newly prep'd 'Chapter Web Page'.

6.   To complete the file transfer is our last step with FTP. In the left area of this window the 'Local PC:' side, double-click on your 'homepage.htm' file (or select the file with a single click of the mouse and then click the button with the red circle around it) and it will transfer from your desktop machine to the SME International web server, the Remote Host. You should get indicators in the lower portion of the window indicating success or otherwise. You should notice activity on your hard disk as the file is read and transferred out.

Should you want to transfer an entire folder/directory you can. Select the folder in the window on the left side and click the arrow button (pointing to the right) red circle and the folder/directory and all of it's files in it will transfer to the web server. You will be prompted to verify that this is what you want to do and you'll need to click an [OK] button.

To navigate back in the directory / folder structure you'll need to double-click on the broken arrow element at the top of each sub-windows directory listing (refer to the red circle below.

More detailed information is available with the FTP Utility's On-Line Help.

CONGRATULATIONS! - You've arrived. Go to your browser (you can leave the FTP window open) and load in your new home page...

    http://chapters.sme.org/nnn/homepage.htm
You'll probably need to go back and edit that file again for corrections and additions then repeat the process over again with another FTP upload of the page.

Note: In your efforts, be sure to use your account in place of the examples sited in this document.
The PASSWORD is case sensitive...check that CAPS Lock!

FTP will log you out after a period of idle time determined by the server. So if you let it sit idle for more that a few minutes it will be logged out and you'll have to reconnect (this is normal as FTP takes a lot of resource, comparitively, on the web server.

Successful mastering of the process described in this document qualifies you as a Chapter Webmaster and your time and talents can expand SME mission and vision..
