In December of 2008, Enterprise Minnesota (et al.) commissioned Public Opinion Strategies to interview 400 manufacturing executives from across the state of Minnesota. These executives represent a statistically proportional cross section of manufacturing companies in Minnesota with regard to location, company size, and type of output, with a margin of error of ± 4.9 percent. To supplement the survey with more detailed, anecdotal views among manufacturing executives, Enterprise Minnesota also conducted seven focus groups in various regions of Minnesota. The website has a wealth of information.

Have you ever wondered how those huge wind turbines are built? Here is a pictorial survey.

Here is a story about a monster shredder. It weighs 30 tons and has 800 horsepower. Just what the bad guys in "Fargo" needed to get rid of their dead bodies! Probably what we need to shred monster Congressional bills too!
Here is a video about a very cool jet-powered amphibian transport plane, suitable for passengers, freight and fire-fighting. And it just needs water for landing and takeoffs. Too bad that it's not an American plane but at least the Boeing 787 finally made its first test flight on 12/15/2009.
| Hiring Of Engineers
Seen As Linked To Minnesota's Economic Future.
Asking whether Minnesota's "long-term economic health" will be hurt because "engineers have taken a big employment hit in this economy," Gather.com's (12/15, Tosto) "Money" blog quoted an expert as saying, "The entire design and construction industry has been hit hard," but "the general mood is more optimistic." On Thursday, the blog noted "we'll be looking for some evidence of a jobs turnaround in manufacturing, a major employer of engineers, when the latest Minnesota jobless numbers are released." The areas "that hire the most engineers -- manufacturing, construction, transportation -- have been among the worst hit in Minnesota with more than 70,000 jobs lost the past year." Yet, there are "companies who are doing fine, and we've started seeing a few job postings here and there from those that are hiring again." |
