Student Project Descriptions

Senior Projects:

Sponsor Company: Caterpillar Work Tools Inc. -
Project Title: "Adjustable Hydraulic Cylinder Mounting Bracket for Thumb Attachment"
Team Members: Chad Ellwood, Justin Schemm, Tyler Light, Jeremy Hlad
Project Description: Caterpillar Work Tools Inc. was looking to develop a weld free hydraulic cylinder bracket that is used to operate the thumb attachments on Caterpillar excavators. The current design is a welded on bracket, which requires eight hours of dealership installation. Caterpillar dealers prefer a quick and efficient method when installing thumb attachment tools. The wedge bracket was developed to decrease installation time and increase versatility. However, this particular wedge design failed to meet the load requirements, due to the cyclic loads causing the bracket to loosen.

Sponsor Company: Exline Inc. -
Project Title: "Automated Drill Machine"
Team Members: Nate Adamson, John Adams, Kyle Jensen, Dustin Grant
Project Description: Design an automated process for a drilling machine that drills through-holes in a Teflon part.

Sophomore Projects:

Sponsor Company: Grain Belt Supply Co.-
Project Title: "Laser Grating Cleaner"
Team Members: Fred Kreiman, Chad Sears, David Tatum , Josh Slinkard
Project Description: Attachment for a drill that crushes dross on grating for laser table.

Sponsor Company: Great Plains Manufacturing -
Project Title: "Tillage Implement Tester"
Team Members: John Green, Ryan Landry, Jeremy Taylor, Clayton Wonsetler, Ty Robbin, Dustin Keiswetter, Cody Fontaine, Chris Perdue
Project Description: Design and analysis of an apparatus to compare wear on tillage points. This apparatus must include a standardized test environment similar to field working conditions and be equipped to run for a prolonged period of time.

Sponsor Company: Premier Pneumatics -
Project Title: "Ratio Valve Seal Assembly"
Team Members: Jacob Quade, Micah Mattison, Zane Johnson, Jordan Lindfors
Project Description: A Ratio Valve combines two different dry bulk products from different bins into one bin to obtain a mixed ratio of a single product. Inside the valve are two inlet tubes with rubber seal stops at the end and two actuated plugs that seat against the seals. The actuated plug restricts the flow of product allowing only one side to flow at a time. The project objective was to take an existing valve and reengineer the seal assembly. The parameters were to design a seal that was not mechanically attached to the inlet tube, yet would hold up to thousands of cycles of plugging with out deteriorating or detaching from the inlet tubes.

Sponsor Company: Aero Transportation Products -
Project Title: "Impact Testing"
Team Members: Devin Krahl, Eric Wagner, Dustin Ward, Reid Rains, Justin Kuntz
Project Description: Team members need to simulate the forces on a gate located on the bottom of a railroad car. They must design a testing apparatus that simulates the impact applied to a gate while the rail cars are being humped together.
