Recent
Meetings
Grain Belt Supply - Decmber
Our Current Chapter Chair, Greg Myers led us
on a tour of their facility in North Salina. We got to see an amazing
place with seven flat lasers, one Tube Laser with Tapping and eight press
brakes with the flexibility to fabricate large and small parts. The
computer-controlled lasers are capable of cutting sheet sizes up to 6' x 20'.
Large parts can be bent and formed on our 22', 350 ton press brake. Parts
identification is easily done by laser etching serial numbers and logos on the
part. They also have New WaterJet Cutting for exceptional edge
quality can cut any shape in a single step. It has edge quality that
doesn’t require secondary finishing. It can cut a wide range of materials
from 1/64" to over 8" thick, including metals, composites, glass, stone,
rubber and plastics. The five-axis head cuts much tighter tolerance at
higher speeds. Grain Belt has taken a small part of their original
business and completely changed the direction of the company using modern
manufacturing.

August - Geoprobe
For the August meeting, SME 230 visited
Geoprobe Systems, where Jason Eikllberry gave us a tour of the production
facility. Geoprobe manufactures soil probing equipment for a variety of
industries. The machines are self contained, with onboard diesel engines, wireless remote control, and
canbus computer system for data aquisistion and control built into the
machine. We really appreciate the tour.

If you have an email
address please send it to Ryan Hampl at bigrbandit@yahoo.com. Make sure to put SME somewhere in the subject line so
my spam filter doesn't pitch it. As an organization we need to
keep our costs in line, and electronic bulletin distribution
really helps.
SME is now sending their Executive Daily Briefing out by email, and it has lots of great business and manufacturing news in it. I highly recommend going to the www.sme.org website and signing up for it.
Secretary's Report
We have had a
great year with SME, but we would really like to
see some other members take on leadership roles in the chapter. The number of tours, newsletters,
parties, and other events that we enjoy are directly related to the
amount of leadership applied. We also realize that the health of our chapter is
dependent on the level of commitment of our members, and that
many of us are very busy at work. But if you do have some spare time,
even an hour a month, it would be very helpful to us. We need to have
officer elections for a new group of leaders.

The College of Technology & Aviation is the newest
and fastest growing of all the colleges at Kansas State
University. Approximately 1,000 undergraduate students
(70 percent male, 30 percent female) are enrolled at the
Salina Campus with 89 percent of students coming from
Kansas.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The College of Technology and Aviation offers two and
four-year programs in the fields of engineering
technology and aviation (including professional pilot).
The academic programs are designed to prepare people
directly for the world of work and are very application
oriented and laboratory intensive. Students learn by
doing. The college regularly places more than 95 percent
of its graduates and each year several employers actively
recruit on campus.
