THIS MONTH'S MEETING
January 16, 2001:
Our program chair was not able to make arrangements for a meeting this month,
so our next meeting will be in February, when we participate in the ISA
(Instrumentation Society of America) equipment show in Savannah.
February 12, 2001:
|
Mike Jackson, President of Verlyn Enterprises, Inc., Douglas, Georgia, died
suddenely and unexpectedly of natural causes at his home last week. Mike and
his friend, John Bybee, participated in Chapter 262's October 2000 tour of the
Ogeechee Technical College facilities. Mike had many useful suggestions to
share with the group. SME Chapter 262 extends its condolences to John and to
the industrial community in South Georgia who will sorely miss Mike's
companionship and his wisdom.

SME 262's May meeting will be held on the 14th (Monday) at 6:30 pm in the back
(meeting) room at Captain Joe's Seafood Restaurant, 12218 Highway 301, South,
Statesboro, GA. This meeting will be used to discuss Georgia Southern's
Manufacturing Internship program and to prepare its new officer for
participation in the SME National Conference at Seattle. See below:
-
Scheduling difficulties on the part of 262's Chair-elect have necessitated a
rearrangement of its officers. Caroline Hembel Beard, 2001 Secretary, has
agreed to serve out the term as Chair-elect, and Daymon Loyd - a Spring
2001 graduate of Georgia Southern University, Student Chapter S085 officer, &
Manufacturing Student of the Year nominee - will serve out Ms. Beard's term
as Secretary. Daymon is working a summer internship at EMI Industries in
Savannah and plans to continue his career in South Georgia. His trip to
Seattle should help to prepare Daymon for a successful future in SME 262
leadership.
-
SME 262's affiliation with Georgia Southern University's S085 has been so
successful that the senior chapter has been asked to assume sponsorship of
Augusta Technical College's student chapter. This new responsibility will
place a significant burden on the already stretched 262 budget and member time
commitment. Any suggestions from national or from other chapters for ways to
help these student chapters thrive will be much appreciated.

This meeting took place the night of the World Trade Center & Pentagon

Ray Davis did an admirable job of reporting their experiences at the SME Annual
