SME 262's May meeting will be held on the 14th (Monday) at 6:30 pm in the back
(meeting) room at Captain Joe's Seafood Restaurant, 12218 Highway 301, South,
Statesboro, GA. This meeting will be used to discuss Georgia Southern's
Manufacturing Internship program and to prepare its new officer for
participation in the SME National Conference at Seattle. See below:
-
Scheduling difficulties on the part of 262's Chair-elect have necessitated a
rearrangement of its officers. Caroline Hembel Beard, 2001 Secretary, has
agreed to serve out the term as Chair-elect, and Daymon Loyd - a Spring
2001 graduate of Georgia Southern University, Student Chapter S085 officer, &
Manufacturing Student of the Year nominee - will serve out Ms. Beard's term
as Secretary. Daymon is working a summer internship at EMI Industries in
Savannah and plans to continue his career in South Georgia. His trip to
Seattle should help to prepare Daymon for a successful future in SME 262
leadership.
-
SME 262's affiliation with Georgia Southern University's S085 has been so
successful that the senior chapter has been asked to assume sponsorship of
Augusta Technical College's student chapter. This new responsibility will
place a significant burden on the already stretched 262 budget and member time
commitment. Any suggestions from national or from other chapters for ways to
help these student chapters thrive will be much appreciated.

This meeting took place the night of the World Trade Center & Pentagon
attacks. Attendance was understandably small. Nevertheless, Daymon Loyd and
Ray Davis did an admirable job of reporting their experiences at the SME Annual
Meeting at Seattle.
-
SME Chapter 262 met April 26, 2002, at MI (Metal Industry) Home
Products in Millen, Georgia. This facility assembles aluminum-frame and some
vinyl-frame
windows for both residential and commercial construction. Because MI runs only
a day shift, 262 changed its meeting time to afford members the opportunity to
tour MI during operating hours. George Grab, Production Engineer, treated the
four participating 262 members and two guests to a very thorough tour.
-
MI could hardly have provided a more appropriate guide for this group: George
Grab's familiarity with every aspect of the operation allowed him to answer the
most detailed questions from industry participants, and the faculty
participants from Georgia Southern University's Manufacturing program gained
valuable insight from Mr. Grab's expertise.
