What do printing 3-D prototypes of biomedical devices and radio frequency identification device (RFID) tagging of police documents have in common? They are both examples of projects at the NAIT Shell Manufacturing Centre.
Though manufacturing is the single largest business sector in Canada, accounting for 2.3 million job positions and 18 per cent of all economic activity, it is not a healthy industry in Alberta due to labour shortages. Between 1994 and 2004, Alberta ranked last among provinces in annual growth of labour productivity and second last in capital productivity.
The NAIT Shell Manufacturing Centre evolved from consultations with industry that identified both a need for more skilled workers and for a facility where businesses can research, develop and test new products and processes.
The Centre includes three smart classrooms, and nine laboratories that can work with a range of materials from plastics to metal. Capabilities range from robotic welding, laser machining, injection molding, and enterprise resource planning software. Though high tech in nature, the Centres outputs are practical products for todays world.
The event will include a short presentation about the development and capabilities of the Centre, followed by tours and demonstrations of the facilities, including robotics, metrology, rapid prototyping, RFID systems, and computer integrated manufacturing cells.
