University of Alberta - School of Business talk on

Project Evaluation

Presented by Vikas Mehrotra
(www.business.ualberta.ca)

Project evaluation is the central task facing a finance manager in any company. At its most basic, project evaluation involves putting together a portfolio of assets that eventually becomes indistinguishable from the firm. Dr. Mehrotra will discuss key concepts in project evaluation, highlighting first the primacy of shareholder wealth maximization as a guiding principle in evaluating projects. Criteria for project evaluation, and indeed any capital investment, must therefore conform to this principle. The concept of market efficiency will also be discussed since it forms a crucial underlying assumption behind the use of modern project evaluation techniques. These techniques include Net Present Value, IRR, Accounting Return on Investment, etc – Dr. Mehrotra will explain these both from a formulaic as well as intuitive perspective, in particular explaining the consistency of some of these approaches with the shareholders’ wealth maximization criterion. Relevant assumptions, rules, and caveats will be noted.
