There is a long history of adhesives being used in manufacturing. More and more, industry is turning to adhesives to solve ever more complex manufacturing issues. Whether it's joining dissimilar substrates that typically can't be welded, bonding low energy plastics, or using an adhesive with a welding process, adhesives offer an alternative means to enhance a manufacturers competitive edge. Often, the use of adhesives requires dispensing equipment that bring consistency to the application process, providing a high degree of repeatability and accuracy. The overall result is often to increase the reliability of a manufactured product, while improving its cost.
Too often, mechanical designers are faced with the challenge of creating an innovative design, but lack the knowledge of adhesive design to make appropriate choices. In many cases, awareness of the various adhesive technologies is needed to take a design to the next level. This presentation aims to accomplish just that: to give designers a basic understanding of the advantages of using adhesives in a manufacturing environment. It also seeks to educate designers on the latest innovations in adhesive design, and to introduce other considerations such as the proper design of adhesive joints. We will also review the various equipment dispensing solutions for each sub-chemistry of adhesive, with hands on demonstrations and video analysis. Hand outs from this presentation will include the Adhesive Sourcebook Volume 7, design guides for bonding various substrates, and samples to take home.
