The term Lean Manufacturing has been in use for nearly twenty years, and many organizations worldwide have been applying lean principles for much longer than that. However, despite the tremendous success many companies have seen, only a few firms in Western Canada have begun to explore what lean thinking can do.
This hands-on workshop will introduce the principles of lean production. Using Lego building blocks, some of the important differences between the mass-production and lean production methods will be demonstrated. Participants will learn first-hand how the lean approach can greatly improve customer service and quality without the need for large inventories.
The session will be led by Dave deJong, who has been involved in design, manufacturing, testing, and education for over twenty years. He currently helps several local manufacturing companies with mechanical engineering and lean manufacturing projects.
In conjunction with the technical presentation, a short presentation about the chapter will be held prior to the technical presentation. Such items as future technical presentations, details of the chapter project, volunteer opportunities with the chapter executive committee, and chapter one-day seminars will be presented. Please read the Seminar section on the website to see full details of the upcoming seminar 'Lean Techniques & Implementation Value Stream Mapping' in November 2008.
