2005 Chapter
News
Dear SME Member,
Hey
folks, I promised you another GREAT YEAR for YOUR Chapter, and are we
ever delivering the value! For those of you who did not
attend the Rockwell presentation on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO),
you missed an outstanding presentation that demonstrated tools YOU can
use to justify buying equipment or services that may initially be more
than you thought you could afford. Trust me, just go to their
website and check out the Plant Engineering Product of the Year for 2003
- www.tcotoolbox.com.
Rockwell definitely raised the bar for the quality of our Lunch and
Learns. The food and the atmosphere were terrific, and I think
that we had close to 50 people attending. Even if you missed the
event, you can contact Joe
Razum at 864.363.2781 or e-mail him at jcrazum@powersystems.rockwell.com
for
your own in-house presentation. Or better yet, just join us in April. To
Joe and the Rockwell team, we thank you for a job well done!

thanks to Don Kier who has redesigned the website. If you

out. http://chapters.sme.org/164/
Last
month Tracy Watson of the Kidder Group along with several other students
from Greenville Tech's Motorsports Program program toured the Hendrick's
Motorsports facility. Just a few things covered in the three hour
in-depth tour were the manufacturing processes of CNC bending, precise
cutting, and fabrication necessary to form the frame cages used in the
motorsports industry. And the latest in racing software, designed
to keep track of an unlimited number of engine, transmission, and
chassis settings for each pass, giving them the ability to compare
passes and automatically highlight any changes. Advanced data
warehousing programs provide technicians with the ability to call up
settings for similar atmospheric conditions, saving time and
money. In the scheme of things, this is just a small amount of
time spent educating students on the skills and technology necessary for
the future, but a huge investment in the race to recruit new industry.

SME
LUNCH & LEARN: The Economic Benefits of Properly Applied PdM Tools
and Techniques
Sponsored
by MaintainIT, Ltd.
A
fundamental truth for both maintenance and production engineers is that
‘nothing happens unless the equipment is working.’ As a
result, plant engineers understand the relationship between equipment
maintenance and production efficiency. But, how much emphasis is
placed on predicting failure that can negatively impact manufacturing
operations? By applying an integrated and cost-effective approach
to implementing predictive maintenance (PdM) for plants and facilities,
data can be extracted on critical production equipment to show where
costly unscheduled downtime and unexpected failures can occur. In
this lunch and learn, descriptions of testing applications such as
vibration analysis, infrared thermography and ultrasonic inspections
will be discussed to include objectives and applications of each test. A
review of justifying, initiating, implementing and demonstrating a
payback through an ROI model will be covered. The presentation
will illustrate how an effective predictive maintenance approach can
positively impact quality programs and support preventive maintenance
initiatives.
Actual
case studies will be included of companies who have derived the benefits
of PdM and avoided the pitfalls of poorly executed programs.
