September 2004

Dear SME Member,

The month of August was another great month for our chapter with both meetings filled almost to capacity.  We would like to thank Dr.  Erich for hosting the Lunch and Learn.  Everyone was excited about seeing computer generated models actually being "printed" in stainless steel.  If you and your company would like to meet with Dr. Erich for a personal meeting or tour, you can contact him through the lab's website:  www.cetl.org. We would also like thank our own Don Kier for hosting the Timken Bearing Plant tour and discussion on utility optimization.  It was a long evening, and I could tell that people were really interested because some of us were still touring at 10:00 pm.  Thanks again to those who made these excellent events possible.

This Month's Meetings

Lunch and Learn
Lunch and Learn with Tim Gillig, Regional Manager of Livingston & Haven.  Tim will make a short presentation on how you can optimize the cost of your existing hydraulic filtration thru common sense practices.  The tools Tim will present have saved customers thousands of dollars annually while enhancing the cleanliness level of their hydraulic fluid!  Come and bring your Tribologists, Lubrication Engineers, Maintenance Managers and Technicians.  After all, if you can save money and document it, you can logically ask for a raise or a bonus...or more importantly, if the machines are up and running, you can sleep all night.
The following will be discussed:
1. Beta Ratios
2. Beta Stability and why it is so important.
3. Element dirt holding capacity (what is the significance?)
4. Filter location (pros and cons of each location)
5. Basic filtration terms and how they apply to your work environment
6. How to actually measure the differences between filter elements on the market
Having this knowledge will allow you to make logical decisions on the type of filtration your plant requires. This will allow you to weed out low quality products that are not placed optimally which add up to system non-performance.
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, September 28th from 11:30 until 1:00

LOCATION: Holly Tree Country Club on Hwy 14 in Simpsonville

PLEASE RSVP: to Gary Tompkins, gary@thekiddergroup.com or 864-271-8880.  RSVP is required and seating is limited to the first 40 who RSVP.
