October 2004 Chapter News

Dear SME Member,

As fall quickly approaches, we are maintaining our momentum from the summer.  This past month was another good month for our chapter with both meetings giving value-added items to take back to your plant.  We would like to thank Tim Gillig, Regional Manager of Livingston & Haven, for hosting the Lunch and Learn.  We even had several folks drive all the way from Tennessee for this event.  We would also like to thank our host Jon McClure, President of ISO Polyfilms in Gray Court , for opening his plant for us.  Jon started his company in 1997 with a dream and a great business plan.  He is now ready to start a huge expansion.  I think that everyone walked away excited about the future.  Thanks again to those who made these excellent events possible.

Your Chapter also held a Board of Directors meeting last night and there were many great ideas.  We are excited about the new people in new positions and the exciting year ahead.  Everyone is in complete agreement that the meetings must be fun, exciting, and give you action items, or "take away" items that help you in your career.  We have an exciting year planned and our special thanks to Don Kier for our new website which we will role out in the next few weeks.

The other wonderful news is the number of folks who accepted positions for next years' Board of Directors.  Here is our current lineup.

  • Chair – Bob Ludvig
  • Chair Elect for 2006 – Jason Premo
  • New Membership Chair – Tracy Watson
  • Membership Retention Chair – Larry Brewer; Tim Jackson
  • Newsletter Chair – Gary Tompkins
  • Website Chair - Don Kier
  • Treasurer -   Gavin Waters
  • Program Chair – David George/Robby St. Louis
  • RSVP Chair – Andew Wyse
  • College/HS Relations Chair – Dee Kivett/ Yong Huang/ Robby St. Louis

Gary Tompkins, Chapter Chairman for 2004, is very pleased to announce that Tracy Watson was honored with our chapter's President's Award for distinguished service to our Chapter.  Tracy has jumped on board and quickly accepted responsibility for making our chapter a "Benchmark Chapter" as stated by SME National.  We thank her for her hard work!

And here's an encouraging article.  Gary just wanted to be sure you knew that there are still big companies committed to working in the US.  Click on the link below for the full story.  " U.S. Can Still Compete with Rest of World in Semiconductor Manufacturing and R&D, Texas Instruments Executive to Tell at Upcoming ISMI Symposium"

Evening Meeting
SME tour of Greenville Tech's Motorsports Technology Center
The MotorSports Technology program at Greenville Technical College has teamed up with Don Satterfield Racing to help provide real "racing world" experience to students seeking to learn more about motorsports. Greenville Tech's Motorsports program is housed in the 94,000 sq. ft. McKinney Regional Technology Center on 227 North Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville , SC. All the MotorSports Technology (MST) classes are held in the evenings and on weekends.

This massive facility also houses Greenville Tech's daytime official General Motors and Nissan training programs, auto body programs, diesel engine programs, and the new Street Rods and Customizing program. Don Satterfield Racing houses and maintains his USAR Hooters Pro Cup racing effort in this facility. He utilizes student help for preparation and crewing. It houses a show room  with street rods, race cars  and new  vehicles donated  by both business and industry in the  region. At the heart of the building are 10 multimedia equipped classrooms, computer labs, offices, and  state-of-the-art equipment used to train technicians in  autobody, automotive, diesel, motorsports and street rods, and customizing  programs.

Ken Williams, Motorsports Industry Liason,  will address the group briefly to tell about the program, then he will lead us through the facility. Ken will also discuss the completion of the assembly of a USAR Hooters Pro Cup Ride&Drive two-seat race car about that time. They plan on conducting a shake down test at Jefferson , GA on a weekend around the middle of October. This car is going to SEMA around Halloween for a BFGoodrich VIP "thrill" ride session at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The SME group will enjoy seeing this "hands-on" educational program and observe the student's handiwork.

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, October 19th, 5:30 pm

LOCATION: Greenville Tech's Motorsports Technology Center - 227 North Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville , SC (located directly across from the entrance to the Greenville downtown airport, or for those of you who don't fly a prop plane... it's across From the Krispie Kreme Donuts and the Phoenix Inn)
