November 2004 Chapter News

Dear SME Member,

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT - Everyone is invited!

Hey folks, I had a couple of people ask me if they could come to our events if they are not an SME member.  The answer to that is:  of course.  We welcome anyone with an interest in Manufacturing and or Engineering.  Our goal is to provide meetings with interesting content where you will say, "WOW!"  We hope that you will have several action items to take back to your company.  So if you are a Technician, Supervisor, Mfg. Manager, Accountant, HR Professional, Banker, Industrial Sales Rep., any kind of Engineer,  or anyone alive and breathing come on out and join us!  Again, most of our meetings are completely free for members as well as non-members and this is the only place in the upstate where you can get a "Free Lunch."

The month of October was another great month for our chapter with both meetings filled almost to capacity.  We would like to thank Datasteam for hosting the Lunch and Learn.  Data Stream did a great job, and they have excellent meeting facilities.  34 people committed to improving their careers and their companies. The feedback on the forms was excellent. Let's give a big thanks to Datastream.

For those of you who missed the evening meeting, you missed one of the new gems of the Upstate.  Ken Williams, Greenville Tech's Motorsports Industry Liaison, hosted the Greenville Tech Motorsports tour.  For those of you excited about ICAR, this is the sister program where the classroom work focuses on "hands-on" instruction.  It was a long evening, and I could tell that people were really rev'd because some of us were still touring after 10:00 pm.  If you have to ask why, check out the pictures below.  There is a class at Greenville Tech where you actually get to build (yes, you) a race car from the ground up.  The first part of the class focuses on assembling a racecar from race-ready production parts.  Once the team has assembled one car in this manner, then they have the opportunity to build a race car from scratch.  We're talking straight steel bars and flat sheet metal being assembled into a real race car.  Most of the folks in the class are over 30 years old and are currently employed.  They are taking this class for fun.  If you are interested, give Ken a call.  I'm sure that he will spend some time with you and explain the program.  However, don't blame me if people start calling you a "Motorhead"

I know that this tour had a profound impact on the people there, and I'd like to say something about our chapter - namely one of our outstanding Board Members, Tracy Watson.  Tracy works for Assetpoint during the day, and is now  working with Greenville Tech Motorsports' Marketing 101 class better known as "Motorheads 101" to market the USAR 2005 race car and program. Tracy Watson believes that Motorsports could be the catalyst for the next generation of engineers.

We were all so excited about this program that I asked Ken and Lee Reid, VP of Smith Engineering to send some pictures and other info on the car.  Here's a little something to "start your engine."  I hope that some of you will consider signing up for the class as a wonderful hobby.

Thanks again to those who made these excellent events possible.

Hello SME team,

I would like to host my November lunch and learn at a location central and convenient to everyone (or at least to the majority).  The Lean Sigma executive introduction training has a "street value" of between $500 - $1000 depending on which consulting agency you go for training (TBM, George Group, ASQ, etc)…so we are definitely providing a high value session to our SME attendees…and lunch to boot! My goal is to maximize attendance and give you something to take home.

Lean – Six Sigma:

Continuous Improvement Strategy Introduction

Lean-Sigma is a proven continuous improvement methodology that helps manufacturers solve complex problems to rapidly improve cost, quality, delivery, and responsiveness to the end customers in all organizational processes.

Lean-Sigma integrates the process variability reductions tools of Six Sigma, the process cycle time reduction and waste elimination tools of Lean Enterprise within the disciplined problem-solving methodology of Six Sigma.   This methodology represents the Black Belt Body of Knowledge, while also applying Lean Manufacturing techniques such as pull systems, 5S, Setup Reduction, Total Productive Maintenance, Kaizen, and much more.

This session will present the attendee with an overview of the implementation methodology and the synergy achievable through Lean and Six  Sig Sigma tools.   A case study will be presented from the presenter's own Lean-Sigma team experience and demonstrate a typical example of the metmethodology in action.

Jason P. Premo recently joined nMetric®, LLC in July 2004 as the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.  Founded in 2000 near Costa Mesa CA, nMetric's patented 4C@Site® Collaborative Production Management (CPM) software is one of industry's first 100% pure web-architected solution that provides manufacturers with powerful tools for lean production scheduling, resource management, manufacturing execution, work-in-process tracking, proactive alerting and messaging while creating a real-time link from the factory floor to enterprise business systems and the supply chain.

Jason brings to nMetric more than 10 years of experience in manufacturing having served in a variety of Engineering, Project Management, Team Leadership, Plant Management and Senior Executive roles for companies as large as $4 Billion and as small as $40 Million in revenue.   No matter what the role or company size, Jason has always been a strong hands-on Continuous Improvement Champion and has successfully led more than 45 combined Lean Manufacturing and Six-Sigma initiatives in five countries.

Jason holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta , GA and is a certified Lean Manufacturing-Kaizen Facilitator and Six Sigma Black Belt. Jason is a frequent guest speaker at many industry events and conferences presenting on a wide variety of topics from practical Lean-Six Sigma implementation to the latest real-time factory floor to enterprise information technology trends and best practices.

He is the President-elect for the Greenville Society of Manufacturing Engineers and is President of the Georgia Tech Greenville-Spartanburg Alumni Association.   He is also a senior member of the American Society for Quality, Association for Manufacturing Excellence, Institute of Industrial Engineers , and International Society of Six Sigma Professionals.   In his spare time, Jason and his wife Kelly enjoy hiking the Appalachian Trail , fishing, running, martial arts, white-water kayaking and golfing.   He sometimes even keeps his golf balls on the same fairway if he's lucky that day.

Evening Meeting - "The Manufacturing, Engineering and Technological Innovations of the Hunley,  the World's First Successful Submarine" presented by Jack E. Marlar of  Fountain Inn , SC

South Carolina is home of one of the most attended Maritime events of our decade which focused on the discovery of the long lost CSS Hunley.  The Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. As scientists and engineers uncovered this submarine, the have all agreed that the CSS Hunley was ahead of its time, since it had advances in submarine technology that would not be seen for another 60 years.  This is guaranteed to be one of the most unique, interesting and inspirational  events SME has ever sponsored.

Jack Marlar's Bio:  Compatriot Marlar is the first Field Representative for the S.C.V.   and a life long resident of the Palmetto state.   Jack was a production supervisor for the last 11 years and purchasing agent for a machine manufacturer for the previous 16 years. He also has been an instructor for Piedmont Tech. College .   Recently Marlar has led several tours to historic sights in Charleston , Columbia and Washington , GA with all the proceeds benefiting the 16th SCV Museum , Greenville , SC or the Friends of the Hunley. Additional Notes

American Successes - America Can Compete Globally

Here's a short note from a friend of our chapter who just moved down from NY:

Gary,

I just wanted to let you know about another semiconductor manufacturer (IBM) who has learned that with newer manufacturing technology, they can produce chips economically in the U.S., and do not necessarily have to move their operations overseas. IBM opened the 300mm fab in Fishkill NY, and I think is looking to open another fab in the U.S. They just need to get their yields up. And we in the U.S need to improve the science and math education of our children, as these newer fabs use fewer workers. Therefore, the desired education level for the remaining workers increases since the manufacturing involves more computer & systems effort than manual labor. I hope you are doing well.

Heather
