December 2004 Chapter News

Dear SME Member,

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT - Everyone is invited!

Hey folks, I had a couple of people ask me if they could come to our events if they are not an SME member.  The answer to that is:  of course.  We welcome anyone with an interest in Manufacturing and or Engineering.  Our goal is to provide meetings with interesting content where you will say, "WOW!"  We hope that you will have several action items to take back to your company.  So if you are a Technician, Supervisor, Mfg. Manager, Accountant, HR Professional, Banker, Industrial Sales Rep., any kind of Engineer,  or anyone alive and breathing come on out and join us!  Again, most of our meetings are completely free for members as well as non-members and this is the only place in the upstate where you can get a "Free Lunch."

The month of November was another great month for our chapter with both meetings filled almost to capacity.  Here's a quick recap.

We would like to thank Mr. Jack Marlar for the great meeting on the Hunley.  There were many folks there who came as both engineers and history buffs and really enjoyed the presentation.  Jack lives and breaths history and did a wonderful job presenting the technical and engineering aspects of the Hunley.  Many of the archeologists have commented that the Hunley appears to be "perfectly" engineered, as if it the design work was through a CAD system.  The craftsmanship was awe inspiring. For example, the countersunk rivets were within 1/1000th of an inch of being in a perfect line.  As Jack pointed out, there were some superior engineers and craftsmen in the South who literally designed and built a submarine that was superior in all aspects.   Let's continue this tradition and strive to have continuous learning and continuous improvement in everything that we do.

We would like to thank Jason Premo for hosting the Lunch and Learn on Lean Six Sigma.  We had 43 people attend the lunch and learn.  The food was great, and the information really hit home with a lot of folks who are striving to improve their company.  The feedback on the forms was excellent. Let's give a big thanks to Jason and nMetric®, LLC.  www.nmetric.com

More on Lean Six Sigma

If you want a copy of Jason's  "Introduction to Lean Six Sigma" presentation, just send him an e-mail at: jason.premo@nmetric.com  Here's a note from Jason on the contents: " The presentation is a brief executive summary of one our software solutions that accelerate Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.  We've been working with manufacturers in many different industries and are very excited about the results, especially regarding the results that empower their continuous improvement strategy and goals.  One example is a recent project completed for a large global fortune 500 consumer products company - to help them manage real-time challenges of their factory floor and accelerate their lean manufacturing initiatives for improved on-time delivery, lower work-in-process inventory, and much more.  The end result was achieved in just a few short months with a seamless link to their SAP ERP and older legacy MRP system, real-time production scheduling, paperless work order execution, 100% accurate part tracking, eliminated manual data collection, and more user-friendly KPI (OEE, Scrap, etc) visibility, tracking and reporting."  He can e-mail it to you in a matter of minutes and we're working on posting it to our website.

Since we know from last month's attendance that Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma are both Hot Tickets in the Upstate, we felt like many of you might like a little more depth on the subject.  Well, you're in luck!
