September 2005 Chapter News

Hey folks, we ended the summer with a great Lunch and Learn at Operations Associates.  We had a full crowd with 52 people attending, and we had to turn about 17 people away since the room would be full.  That's a great response rate!  We will continue to add value to YOUR CHAPTER.  We thank you for a job well done!

We will include the calendar on both the newsletter and also on our website.

We would like to welcome our New Board Member: Richard (Dick) McCormack.  Dick is the Vice President of HUMANEERING International www.Humaneering.com a company that focuses on engaging human assets and building human capital.  In the age where many firms look overseas, it's great to have a powerful gentleman who can help your firm leverage current employees and keep our doors open in the US.  Welcome aboard!

Notes from Bob Ludvig, SME Chapter Chairman:

Our Chapter is actively considering candidate names for next year's chair-elect, secretary, and treasurer positions. If you are interested, send Bob a quick e-mail at robert.ludvik@siemens.com and include a phone number where he can give you a call.

40th anniversary celebration

Friday October 28th, 2005  Join all your co-members for our SME Chapter 164 40th anniversary celebration. We confirmed Friday night October 28th as the date of the event at the Marriott Renaissance Park in downtown Spartanburg. We will start the event with Social Hour and Cash Bar at 6:00 PM and dinner starting at 7:00 and then some awards will be given around 7:45. We are going to try to get Tim Jackson to give a brief history of our chapter. We have confirmation of our guest speaker who will be Richard (Dick) Morley. He is the "father" of the programmable controller and also co-author of a book called How Manufacturing Will Work in the Year 2020. According to people that have heard Mr. Morley speak, he is a very interesting speaker and could hold one's attention all night. The cost will be $30 per person and friends and spouses are invited. Everyone including members and the general public is invited.

Many thanks to Don Kier who has redesigned the website.  If you have not seen our new Chapter 164 Website, take a minute to check it out. http://chapters.sme.org/164/

This Month's Meetings

SME LUNCH & LEARN:

Meeting Date: Thursday, Sept 29th, 2005
Time: 11:30 am to 1:00 pm Lunch & Learn
Location: Spartanburg Steel Plant, Spartanburg, SC.  Directions Below.
Program:
MEETING THE NEW DEMANDS OF FRICTION & TOOL PERFORMANCE FROM
ADVANCED HIGH STRENGTH STEEL Quantifying & Controlling Friction by Jeff Jeffery, President & CEO of IRMCO, an advanced forming film technology firm, specializing in metal strain, friction analysis, and process optimization.

Raw materials and overhead accounts for over 75% of the total operating cost of a metal
stamping company’s budget. Stamping lubricants are less then 1/2 percent of the total
budget, though they significantly influence leanness and profitability. Their influence on metal
strain distribution and friction can be the determining factor of company profit.

Key Areas Presented
• Overview of High Strength Steel use in the auto industry
• The data driven outcome when comparing stamping lubricant technology performance
• Why High Strength Steel places new demands on lubricants
• Why friction management plays a key role in tool performance
• Available diagnostic tools for quantifying friction performance
• How to avoid costly tool failure when selecting a lubricant
Learning Outcomes
• Easy to achieve cost savings opportunities with improved friction results
• How to improve friction results and increase tool life on new alloys
• How to use diagnostic tools when quantifying friction performance
• How to avoid costly tool failure when selecting a lubricant

Jeff does an outstanding job of helping engineers really understand that a well designed experiment with quantitative results can be used to improve yields, reduce scrap, reduce cycle time, improve product quality, and allow engineers and managers to go home and sleep through the night.

Who Should Attend:
Business Owners
Lean Process Directors
Plant Managers
Quality Managers
Metallurgists
