CHAIRMANS MESSAGE January
12, 2008 Just a brief note about me because what is important is SME and you. My name is Mike Hayden; Im the 2008 Chair of the Wabash Valley Chapter. I am a Professor at Indiana State University and past faculty advisor for the ISU student chapter (which is sponsored by the Wabash Valley Chapter). Membership and involvement in professional organizations has been declining for decades. Though we have been cited as being better off than many local chapters, our local chapter reflects the national trends. "Time" and "how does this society help me" seem to be factors in involvement with organizations such as SME. I hope to convince you that looking at both of those factors should lead you to greater involvement in SME. The SME website lists many ways that you can be involved in SME and many ways in which SME can help your career, your colleagues, and your company. Research that I have conducted shows that college students involved in professional organizations get higher paying jobs and quicker promotions. This seems to be due to professional contacts and an increased level of professional ability, e.g., being certified. Our local chapter sponsors many very worthwhile presentations and plant tours. In addition to very enjoyable fellowship, your professional expertise and business opportunities will likely increase if you join SME and attend meetings. We hold many joint meetings with other sections and societies to further enhance our opportunities and influence. Please consider joining and/or attending meetings. If you have any suggestions , comments, or questions regarding our senior chapter, the student chapter, or any other topic of interest to you, please contact me or another officer. Professionally, Michael A. Hayden, Ph.D. |
