Title: Manufacturing and Intellectual Property

Synopsis: Manufacturing methods frequently represent the "secret recipe” that allow effective use of forming, fabricating and various manufacturing technologies. While these methods represent valuable intellectual property, method patents can be difficult to draft, license and assert. As an alternative, or in addition to patent protection, some companies rely on trade-secret protection for their methods and processes. This webinar targets the differences between patents and trade secrets and suggests complimentary strategies for implementing both to capture, protect and enforce proprietary rights in manufacturing, particularly in the context of the new America Invent Acts legislation signed into law recently. The webinar session discusses: strategies for identifying commercially important aspects of manufacturing methods; considerations for choosing between trade-secret and patent protection; and optimizing patents and trade secrets for manufacturing methods. USPTO Title: The America Invents Act Changes the Patent System: What It Means to Manufacturers

Synopsis: The ability for U.S. Advanced Manufacturers to secure and leverage patent protection for their inventions has just been impacted by the most game-changing patent-related act of Congress in more than 60 years. The America Invents Act, passed by Congress in 2011, has now gone into full effect, with important provisions taking hold in September 2012 and March 2013. The presenters will summarize how this law changed the patent system and discuss how it impacts researchers, engineers and patent owners. They will also consider strategies for maximizing patent value and minimizing risks in view of these recent changes.
Additive Mfg - Injection Molding - Stamping Title: Additive Manufacturing - Injection Molding and Steel Stamping

Synopsis: There has been little to no discussion in the industry about using low-cost machines to manufacture production quality parts. In this two-part webinar, injection molding with a low-cost additive manufacturing machine, as well as utilizing additive manufacturing to create steel stamping tools, will be discussed. For injection molding, Rayce Americas sought to determine the capabilities and limitations of this low-cost machine. For steel stamping, again Rayce Americas wanted to determine the capabilities and limitation of creating tools from a low-cost machine as well as a high-end machine.

Title: Deep Cryogenic Treatment of Metals, an Emerging Technology 
Presenter: Frederick J. "Rick" Diekman, President and Founder, Controlled Thermal Processing Inc.; Rozalia Papp, Business Development Specialist / Heat Treatment, Air Liquide; and Susil Putatunda, PhD, Wayne State University
Synopsis: In this webinar, learn how deep cryogenic treating (processing of metals below 244°F) is making serious in roads into both consumer and industrial markets. Some of its applications defy the conventional logic that the only effect it has is to convert retained austenite to martensite. A striking application that illustrates this is the treatment of automotive brakes. Common brake rotors are pearlitic cast iron, without any austenite. Some results of the influence of cryogenic treatment on the mechanical properties, including wear resistance, hardness and fracture toughness of gray cast iron will be shown. In a similar manner, carbide cutting tools, mechanical gears and electronics, all show interesting effects that are not supported by the conventional theories as to why the process works. This webinar also summarizes some of the recent research done worldwide.

Synopsis: In this webinar, traditional trim-line prediction, in-press development and finalization, trim-line development and validation using simulation software were discussed. Also explored were the benefits of trim line development: (1) recognizing limitations of conventional trim development and (2) identifying the potential gains and risks in applying software-based trim development.

This webinar is not focused only on maintenance but focused on the entire process and preventing pitfalls that impact your part quality, damage presses and reduce OEE. It details how tools like tonnage monitors, die protection and communication networks are vital to monitor and track part quality, OEE and maintenance of tooling and presses. New technology to reduce scrap-programmable dies, new materials and lubrication technology is now available to reduce scrap and tooling wear. 
Tool Design Title: Evaluating Tool Design for Transfer Automation

Synopsis: Much attention is given to simulating the formability of a part in the die. However, less attention is given to the design of the tool required to fulfill its role in the production of parts. A well-designed tool must not only work the metal well (formability), it must allow for loading and unloading the formed part from the tool and transfer to the next operation. This webinar discusses two case studies where due diligence in the design step — using 3-D simulation tools — could have eliminated hundreds of hours of lost productivity, and significantly improved the bottom lines of the stampers and their customers.
