Activities

This year we planned many activities for our chapter members as well as students in the Engineering Technology program.  We began the year by re-structuring our meetings including the way they are run and their content.  As an officer committee we decided that by having more productive meetings, we would get more student interest and involvement.  Over the course of the year we have had numerous socials including one earlier in the year at Fitzwilly’s to kick the year off and let everyone get acquainted.  We have also had others including one at the Fox and Hound and at Double Daves.  We have found that these socials have really brought our membership totals up and being able to network with each other is really a great tool.  Also, to end the spring semester we held an end of the year BBQ which was a great success.  This semester we are planning more socials and have been actively participating in plant tours and meetings with our parent chapter in Houston.

Our chapter participates in two major community activities, Engineering Day at the Mall and the Big Event.  Engineering Day at the Mall occurs once a semester when all the student organizations from the Dwight Look College of Engineering set up booths at the Post Oak Mall in College Station to show the local children how fun engineering and technology can be.  We get to play with the kids and they see how important engineering is in their daily lives.

The Big Event is held every April.  We send out at least two groups per year to either paint houses, landscape, or build for various families in the community.  This activity includes all the student organizations on campus not only the engineering related organizations.  This year we cleaned up a young couple’s yard and did some landscaping.  We also painted an elderly couple’s home while we listened to some stories of old from the owner.  We always look forward to the Big Event as we have so much fun going out into the community to use our technical expertise.
