Announcements

The Manufacturing Engineering Certification Institute (MECI) of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT) examination will be offered on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in ANDR 220 starting at 9 AM.  In preparation for the exam the METS Department will be offering exam preparation classes.   Non students or non members are also welcome to attend the review sessions at 5:00-6:00 PM on Mondays in ANDR-229 and to take the test with the students on May 1st.  Non students should register directly with MECI of SME.  Calumet Senior Chapter 112 sponsors the exam site for non-students.

MET 495 and IET 495 Senior Project Survey both require students who register for the course to take either the Certified Manufacturing Technologist, Fundamentals of Manufacturing Examination exam or an ASQ quality certification exam such as the Certified Quality Associate (CQIA) or higher if qualified.  For the ASQ CQIA exam contact Professor Scachitti whose office is ANDR 232.  Student fees for the SME exam are $195 for student non-members and $95 for Student Chapter S161 members.   Give your check or credit card information and filled out application to Professor Neff by Monday, March 29, 2010

The SME CMfgT exam currently costs $490 for non-members who are not students and $245 for SME members who are not students. People who pass the CMfgT exam are certified and may use the designator CMfgT after their name on business cards, email signitures, name plaques, SME membership, and the like.

Professor Neff has a computer based practice test called the CMfgT Self Assessment Program with 160 questions available on the campus network for use at no cost.   SME prints a very good review book called "Fundamentals of Manufacturing," 2nd Ed. by Philip D. Rufe published in 2002, available for $75 Member price, (non-members pay $83).  Calumet Senior Chapter #112, which sponsors our PUC Student Chapter 161 has given 22 copies of the book as part of its scholarship program to the department to lend to students currently registered for the senior survey course MET/IET 495.  Having this text is required for the senior survey course and is a needed reference for the exam. To borrow a copy you will need to sign the return agreement available from Prof. Neff or your senior survey instructor. If you want your own copy use this link to the SME web site and pay via credit card or call SME toll free at 1-800-733-4763. There is also a free 70 page Adobe Acrobat (pdf) solutions manual file for the exercises in the text available from SME.  There is also a 104 page pdf  practice exam file with 59 questions available on the web.  Newly prepared is a reference covering those sections of the test not included in the Fundamentals of Manufacturing called the Fundamentals of Manufacturing Supplement.  This book is also a required reference for the exam.  Again, as part of its scholarship program SME Senior Chapter 112 has bought 21 copies of this $75 (member price) book (non-members pay $83) which can be borrowed through Professor Neff.  A new 200 question practice exam is given in the 102 page Fundamentals of Manufacturing Workbook that will be used in the class review.  SME Chapter 112 has contributed 18 copies of this $21 (member price) book (non-members pay $25) to the METS Department for students to borrow.  The savings from borrowing the three books is $171 compared to individual member prices to purchase (not counting $8 shipping and handling per book).

To join SME as a student member ($20), fill out the student application using the link on the Club MET home page or get a student membership application from Professor Neff.  Membership application and dues payment must be received at least 30 days prior to taking the exam to qualify for the member rate on the certification exam.  Apply for SME student membership to get the student member certification rate which saves you at least $80.
